COTTON TARIFF.

Federal Cabinet Reconsiders

Question.

ENGLISH OPPOSITION.

CANBERRA, August 27.

The Federal Cabinet to-day briefly discussed the cotton duties, which recently aroused the opposition of the English cotton manufacturers. The Cabinet decided that it could take no action because the alterations could only be made effective by Parliament.

However, the Minister of Customs, Mr. T. W. White, will have a census made of" cotton goods affected by the new duties which were on order in England before August 2, and, in cases where hardship is proved, the Minister will consider remitting the duty, provided the goods are- entered for home consumption before November 30, 1034.

LANCASHIRE VIEW.

Dispute With Australia Over

Duties.

DELAY ANTICIPATED

(Keceivea 11 a.m.)

LONDON, August 27.

Mr. Hewitt, leader of the deputation representing the Lancashire cotton industry that waited on Mr. S. M. Bruce and dissociated itself from the boycott of Australian foodstuffs proposed by the Lancashire Grocers' Association, commented on the report that Australia had decided to adhere to the suggested duties on Lancashire cotton.

He said that Lancastrians could hardly act further pending an official announcement on the subject. Perhaps the Australian Government was leaving the decision to the new Parliament.

He added: "We had hoped the application of the duties would be delayed until the Australian Government had fully considered our case since the cancellation of orders has caused much dislocation and loss and no new business has been placed.

"The Australian reference to special treatment in hard cases, also the admission of goods for home consumption up to November 11, may mean that the application of the increases will be somewhat delayed."
