MUD NUISANCE.

SPRAY FROM WHEELS. QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. It is most annoying in wet weather — particularly if the car lias recently been cleaned —to follow another vehicle which throws up a spray of fine mud from its improperly guarded wheels. There, is practically no make of machine that is free from blame in this respect, and on occasions the range of the spray is considerable. Windscreen wipers cannot easily deal with it, especially when there is no rain at the time to help to wash the spray away. It not infrequently happens that a driver has to get out several times on quite a short run to clean the screen. The trouble, of course, is particularly marked at night, when the difficulties of driving

against approaching headlights are considerably increased by mud on the screen.

In tlio House of Commons, the Min ister of Transport lias been asked if he has noticed that most of the mud splashed on to motor ears comes from the preceding vehicle, that at any distance up to 30 yards the following car receives spume or mud on its windscreen from the rear wheels of the leading machine, and if he will cause observation and experiment to be made with a view to encouraging the fitting of rear wings which reach to within Bin of the road instead of approximately ISin. The reply was that the. matter would be brought to the notice of manufacturers, but that until the Minister had their opinions he could not well consider more stringent regulations. This was a sensible reply ; and motorists will agree that the matter, is an important one. The manufac-' turers of many vehicles should do more than at present to prevent their products causing this particular type of nuisance.
