USE OF COSMETICS.
DETERMINED GERMAN WOMEN
Despite the fact that Heir Hitler does not approve of women using make-up aiM that notices, such as "Women do not smoke," "Women do not rouge," are hung in the cafes, German women continue to use beauty aids to advantage, said Mrs. T. ,T. O'Shee (Miss Kathleen Court), on her return to Sydney after a trip abroad (says an Australian paper). The German girls and women, she said, were very attractive. They were not of the plump type one might have expected, but were slim and graceful, and among them were many very lovely, natural, platinum blondes.
The women of Rome, too, were very smart, and it wae only in the rural parts of Italy that one saw the handkerchief headdress. The Italian women were great exponents of the art of make-up, too, and every other little shop on the main street of Rome was a beauty parlour. In England, Europe and America cosmetics had been accepted as a necessary toilet habit, and even Very young girls used it as a matter of course. It was not a qnestiou of whether a • woman used cosmetics or not, but what type she used.
Facial treatment had undergone something of a change, Mrs. O'Shee explained. No longer were massages and hot applications used by the best beauty experts, who now considered that snich treatment stretched the ekin. The work of beautifying was done with creams and astringents, which were patted into the skin.
Mrs. O'Shee described a new one toned powder that takes on the individual colouring of the wearer, according to the blood heat and oiliness of the skin. There was a tendency in England to use darker powder, she said, and Englishwomen spent much time trying to cultivate the brown complexions natural to colonial girls.
Eye shadow was extensively used, she said, and had flecks of gold" or silver, which looked particularly attractive at night, and made the eyes look much brighter. The colours of the newest nail lacquer were terra cotta and mother of pearl, and for these heavier coloure, the border at the tip of the nail was covered over.
