St. ANDREW'S SOCIETY.
The Sir Walter Scott anniversary of the Auckland St. Andrew's Society was held on Saturday evening in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall. The president, Mr. John W. Bissett, J.P., accompanied by past-president Mr. John Barr and Mr. John Barbour, hon, secretary, were piped into the hall and to the dais by Pipe-Major D. Ferguson. ; The president gave a eulogy to the inemory~of Sir Geo. ,Fowlds, patron of the society, after -\vhich ■the large audienco stood in silence as a mark of respect. The president then invested pastpresident Mr. John Barr and installed lim in s the chair to conduct the meeting, explaining that this year's session was one •to honour their past presidents. During the evening Mr. John Barr gave an address on Sir Walter Scott, "The Man and His Works," which was highly appreciated. ' '
The artists of the evening, Miss Gutry, Messrs. Robert Simmers, George Barnes, W. A. L. McDonald, and Highland dancing by Miss Gwen McNaughton's pupils, Misses Brackenridge and McNaughtori. Supper was then served by the ladies, and dancing of Scottish reels was enjoyed.
