DEFEAT OF PAPAKURA.

Playing on a sodden field that had been well stirred i.p by a previous game, Devonport did well to score a win by 13 points to 6 against the improving Papaknra team. As the game went there was little betwfipn the teams, victory going to the side that made the most of the scori,n<? opportunities that came their way, while a shade of luck to the other side might have seen a different ccsult recorded. Both sides battlod strenuously throughout, most of the play being done with the ball oh the ground. The game, however, vas never dull, rush and counter-rush taking- place with remarkable rapidity. Under the conditions unintentional breaches and scums and penalty kicks figured largely in the game. For the winners Laing, at ftill-back. played a sound .game. He placed his kicks with good judgment and his goal kicking was a material factor towards victory. The inside backs defended well and were kept busy stopping the invading rushes of their. opponents. 1 Among the. forwards Smith. Stephen and I (lunt were conspicuous. The Papakura 'players' gave an excellent display. They I defended stoutly and y;erc always dangerous in combined rushes with the >all at foit. ■

A little more experience should make them a formidable combination _n senior football. Wilson, at full-back, i layed a good game, his fielding of the sodden ball being excellent. Koss, at wing three-quarter, showed a useful turn of speed and scored a meritorious try. Pope was also conspicious for pood all-round -work. Among the forwards Davis, Johnson and Dunn showed great dash, though the vanguard as a whole gave a line display.
