ONION TRADE.

AUSTRALIAN TARIFF. In a report presented to the Australian House of Representatives, the Tariff Board has rejected a proposal that the rate of duty on onions should be reduced. The board found that, despite the existing duty of £8 a ton and other inevitable landing charges, 3150 tons of onions were imported from countries other than New Zealand in the year ended June, 1933, most of them coming from Japan and the United States. The board stated that, although prices of Australian onions might be high in seasons when the supply was short, there 1 was no likelihood of an onion famine. An average price of £7 a ton was not unreasonable. The board pointed out, however, that the industry in Australia was inadequately organised, and that an effort should be made by growers _ to regulate the area under production, particularly as the profitable market was limited.
