WEEK OPENS QUIETLY. COMMERCIAL BANKS FIRM. There was a quiet opening to the Auckland Stock Exchange this morning, and only three sales were recorded at the first. : call, Bidding all round was scarcely as brisk as it was last week. As an instance, the breweries section was quite neglected, with the exception of a buyer for Toohey's at £1 6/. There was a good demand in the banking section. Buyers for Commercials moved tip to 15/8, and Nationals of Australasia were again in demand at £12 4/. Reserves were firm, with lowest sellers at £6 7/, but buyers were still 1/ less. New Zealands were steady between £2 6/6 and £2 6/9. In the timber section Leyland-O'Briens were again on offer at £1 3/, and a buyer came in at par. Waihis were steady between £1 10/7 and £1* 10/9, and King Solomons from 3/10 to 4/2. Government stocks were all in keen demand, the only offering being a parcel of forties, for which £108 was asked. Demand for Reserve Banks, There was a good inquiry for Reserve Bank shares at £6 6/0 at the noon call, which brought in solleis at £6 6/9. Commercial Banks recorded a sharp rise. A transaction at 15/10 was 3d higher than before the dividend was paid last week. and more were still wanted at 15/9, with holders asking 16/. Robinson's Ice scrip was on offer at 18/9 after further business at recent values, and buyers were slightly lower at 17/10. Two unusual quotations were buyers' offers of 9/ for Bruce Wool and of 7/6 for Lewis Eady preference shares.
