GRAND NATIONAL.

RACING AT RICCARTON THE OPENING DAY. FIELDS FOR TO-MORROW. The New Zealand Grand National meeting will open at Riccarton to-morrow, and will be continued on Thursday and Saturday. Excellent fields have been accepted for, and there should be some splendid racing. The chief events to-morrow will be the big steeples and . the Winter Cup, while on Thursday the Grand National Hurdles will be decided. Prospects are for fine -weather and a good track, and there will be win and place betting. The Trial Hurdles. Ten are engaged for the Trial Hurdles, Imt Blacksmith, the topweight, is also accepted for in the Jumpers' Flat Race, and in whichever he is started he should go well. He won nicely at Napier Park, and has been placed on several other occasions during the last few months. Gold Knight.has nothing to his- credit since lie won at South Canterbury in May last. Constant Sun won over hurdles at Hawke's Bay, while Emotion annexed the Hawke's Bay Hurdles, and has been in the money on several other occasions. Verden has shown .promising form over hurdles this season, winning at South Canterbury and Ashburton. Revision won good races on the flat last season, and would only need to. jump to be troublesome. He is also in the Jumpers' Flat. Fleeting Glance won the Kildare Hurdle Race, two miles, at Riccarton, at Easter, beating Rasouii and others, while she was also placed .at DuneCin and South Canterbury. Transact won twice at Otaki, and was also successful in the Talavera Hurdles, one mile and a half, at Trentham during, the. last, couple of months, while Sunward has been second in his last two starts. The public may go for

BLACKSMITH EMOTION VEBDEX. The Paparua Handicap. Copyist is a good sprinter, and raced •well last season. He is 6aid to be well forward, and he should race prominently in the Paparua*Handicap. Dismiss was a smart two-year-old last season, winning at Dunedin and Trentham. and though he did not show up at the Christcliureh Hunt meeting he should be improved. Cranford, it is stated, is not quite ready yet, but Guarantee finished second to Water Power in the Onslow Handicap on the last day of the Tecent Wellington meeting. Mobile won over 6ix furlongs at South Canterbury in June, beating Great Star and others, which was hie last start, while Mercian Prince was successful on two occasions over a mile at Trentham. Chliota and Moatoa appeal most of the others. I The principal fancies may be MERCIAN PRINCE COPYIST DISMISS. The Cashmere Plate. The Cashmere Plate is run at special weights, and is for horses that at time of nomination have never won it race. Top Rank, however, was successful at the Christchureh Hunt meeting since nominations elos<vl, and will have a large following. Serate'hmere Scar was third to him, and Milnrow fourth. Braw Lad was placed over seven furlongs at Dunedin. Friday Night is a full brother to Phar Lap, and is stated to be a good galloper, while Horn's Reef has been working well. Those who may carry.most money are TOP RANK SCRATCHMERE SCAR HORN'S REEF. The Jumpers' Flat.

Mount Boa, who is at the head of the Jumpers' Flat, would take some beating / if he was at his best, for last year he won the Winter Cup. Revision, who is also engaged in the Trial Hurdles, was responsible for some good efforts on the flat last season, his wins including the Ashhurst Cup, one mile and a quarter. Royal Lineage has been performing well over hurdles, and has plenty of pace, while Arcade, after his recent success at Riccarton, looks to have a great chance. Invictus, Huntique and Royal Limond have all been successful over obstacles, and they should also go well. The best backed may be HUNTIQUE ARCADE ROYAL LIMOND. . The Big Steeples. Billy Boy has the same weight in the Grand National Steeples as that which lie won with two years ago, and after his victory at Trentham he will not be neglected. Callamart has a Great Northern Steeplechase to his credit, but recently his best performance was in running third in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham. Thurina won last year, and was second to Billy Boy in the last Wellington Steeplechase. He unfortunately is not sound. If he was the public would install him favourite. Riotous was third in the latter event and won the July Steeplechase on the last day, beating Valpeen. Riotous is a very promising candidate, and he only has to stay on to be hard to beat. Valpeen, who won the Great Northern Steeplechase, was unplaced in the Wellington Steeplechase, but, as stated above, was runner-up to Riotous on the last day. He schooled well the other morning at Riccarton, and he should be difficult to dispose of. Of the others Valves and Peterette appeal most. The best backed may be VALPEEN RIOTOUS BILLY BOY. The Enfield Steeples. Eight are carded for the Enfield Steeplechase. Kapuna has nothing to his credit recently, while Punchestown was second in the Dromore Steeplechase at Aehburton, but disappointed at South Canterbury since then. Rational 11. has won over hurdles, and ; if he jumps he should go well. Taura Lad was successful in the Matai Steeplechase at Trentham, and was second in the Mariri Steeplechase at the same meeting, while he has been placed on: other occasions. He should prove hard to beat. Currajong was successful in the Rangitikei Hunt Cup recently. Night Club won the Teschemaker Memorial Hunt Cup at South Canterbury, while Willow Glen ■was third over steeples on two occasions at meetings on the latter course, and also at Waimate. Mos-t money may go on | TAURA LAD NIGHT CLUB RATIONAL 11. The Winter Cup. A very big field is engaged in. the Winter Cup. Curie remains at the head, and after his good efforts at Trentham last month he will have to be respected. However, he is stated to have struck himself. Autopay has hot raced .for some time, but goes well fresh. Southdown was a good performer last season, as was Vintage; who galloped well at Riccarton ~qn Saturday. Polydora ran second in this ■ riqe last year, but has not been seen out for ; some time. Davolo won the Whyte • '.'. Handicap, one mile, at Trentham, easily, and was third in the Brabazon Handicap. He should be bard to beat. Ranelagh. and

Slippery failed in the Brabazon Handicap, but Water Power is stated to be well ] forward. Bay Tree won two events up to I a mile at the last Grand National meeting, ' and after his efforts at Trenthain last month he will be in request. Great Star is said to be right back to his best form, i while the success of Ventrac in the Brabazon Handicap last Saturday week will bring him into favour. Prince Val scored over a mile at Trentham, beating Curie, and he is' not out of it. Tiger Gain is useful, while Palermo's success r over a mile and 35yds at South Canter-!! bury shows he can get the distance. Eiinuohm won over seven furlongs at Dan-| nevirke, and was third to Foreign Queen and Rereatu at Awapuui over a similar | distance. Fracas is a smart galloper, but j has not raced for some time. Giggleswick, who has won on the West Coast and at. "Dunedin, and was fourth in the Brabazon Handicap after getting away badly, has a show, as has Haulbowlinc, who was second in the latter event. Red Sun has been galloping well at Riccarton, and he and Princess Doreen appeal most of the others. The public may go for BAY TREE DAVOLO VENTRAC The Concluding Event. Another big field is .engaged in the Avonhead Handicap, including some smart hacks. This race may be divided, and the field is shown in divisions below. On recent form the following may appeal:— First Division: SQUARE ACRE VOCAL Second Division: SYNAGOGUE COLLOSIAN. The acceptances are:— 11.33—TRIAL HURDLES of £175. One mile and three-quarters.
