ASSAULT AT DANCE.
PROBATION FOR YOUNG MAN. HAMILTON, this day. "But for what the senior sergeant has said, you would have gone to prison," said Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., to James Andrew Walton, aged 10, when he admitted in the Police Court to-day a charge of assaulting Allan Pennell at Eureka on July 10. Senior Sergeant Power stated that defendant entered a hall where a dance was in progress and struck Pennell several severe blows, without provocation. Apparently he objected to Pennell talking to a young woman, whom Walton knew. "He has a formidable list," commented the senior sergeant. "Most of his offences are due to careering about the country to dances and drinking to excess. However, he has a position now and intends to turn over a new leaf." He was admitted to probation for two years, a condition being that ;jo shall refrain from drinking liquor and attending danees.
