TWO MEN KILLED.
MOTOR CAR AND TRAIN ON OUTSKIRTS OF OHAKUNE. WOMAN" PASSENGER INJURED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, this day. A mixed train which left Oliaknne for Raetihi on Saturday forenoon struck a motor car on the RochFort crossing, near Ohakune, and as the result two men lost their lives and a young woman passenger wag seriously injured. The victims were:— Killed. Frank Milton Carroll, married, aged about 55, sawmill manager, of Manunui, near Taumarunui. John Russel Cunningham, married, aged 3S, sawmill manager, of Erua. Injured., Miss Lilian Carroll, aged about 23, daughter of Mr. Carroll, severe injuries to a thigh and leg. The car, which is believed to have been driven by Mr. Carroll, was proceeding along the main south road towards Taihape, having left Manunui about 7 a.m. The train struck it at a point which was about level with the driver's seat, and carried it some chains to the cattle stop, where it was crushed. Mr. Carroll received severe head injuries and died within a few minutes of the impact. Mr. Cunningham also received head injuries, and one leg was badly lacerated. He died on the way to the Raetihi Hospital. Miss Carroll, suffering from a severe wound on one thigh and badly bruised on both legs from the hips down, was removed to the Raetihi Hospital, where her condition was found to be critical. The crossing is a fairly open one, and it is thought that t"ie side screens interfered with the driver's vision. The car was badly damaged. The train was promptly brought to a standstill, and conveyed the injured to Raetihi. The condition of Miss Carroll was reported this morning to be slightly improved.
