LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
RICHMOND TOUR. DEPARTURE THIS MORNING. The Richmond Rovers team left Auckland this morning, en route to Taranaki, where a match against combined clubs is to be played at Western Park on Thursday, followed on Saturday by a fixture in Hawke's Bay. All members of the senior side were available. Mr. J. Redwood is manager of the team. SECOND GRADE POSITION. i PAPARtiR'A'S EXPENSIVE LOSS. i; .In their?' match "at Maesey Park, Waiukti, on Saturday, Papakura lost their chance for second grade championship honours through a surprise defeat by Mangere, 7 —6, under unusual circumstances." They had the game practically won, but a try literally was thrown away. A. winger got acroee the line near the corner, and, confronted by two opponents, attempted to fool them by pretending to. touch the ball down, with the object of running behind the posts. The greasy ball, slipped from his grasp, and an opponent jumped on it to gain a forcedown. The position now is that Otahuhu, who have to meet Mount Albert jn the curtain-raiser to the Northland match, are in line for the' championship, but to succeed have to win the' contest. AFFAIRS OF REFEREES. At the meeting of the Auckland Referees' Association last evening, Mr. L. Bull presiding, the referee, Mr. R. Otto, of the exhibition match at Waiuku, complimented the junior management on the arrangements for the fixture. Mount Albert Club thanked Mr. L. H. Wilson for controlling its unofficial senior trial game, after having handled an official junior match. r Mr. S. Billman, with Mr. 0. Chalmers as seconder,' tabled a notice of motion, providing for an amendment of the terms of membership, that in addition to passing the prescribed examinations, a nominated member not less than six weeks afterwards, and having controlled not less than four matches, be the subject of a report by the grading committee to the executive, before the ballot is taken. It was ruled that in the- case of a shot -at goal where the ball first strikes the ground, then touches a player and goes over the bar, and between the posts, a goal must be disallowed. ~ , A resolution was passed extending bon voyage and wishes for a speedy return to health of Mr. F. W. Ellis, late treasurer of the Auckland League, who left by uic Aorangi for Australia.
