While crossing the Tokomaru bridge, gouth of Palmers ton North, Mr. John g en ry Liggins, aged 55, of Tokomaru, ■was struck by the train bound from Paljnerston North to "Wellington and killed. Mr. Liggins apparently realised too late that the train was almost upon him. Footmarks suggest that he climbed the Girders at the side of the. bridge, but was wearing gumhoots and the vibration oausod him to slip against the train, liein" caught and tossed «inlo the stream bed" 15ft below, -where his body was later found by his son. The bridge has fln .uphill approach at each end and Mr. Liens' efforts to escape at tin side probably accounted for his not being seen by the engine crew. . Mr. Liggins had lived in the Toko'marn district all his life and saw service "in the Boer War and the Great "War. Hβ is survived by his wife and two children.
