CHRISTCHURCH HUNT.

BRABAZON TO VENTRAC.

ABCABE SCORES IN HUBDLES,

A VICTORY FOE HOROWHENUA.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHUECH, Saturday.

Serving as a prelude to the Grand National carnival, the Christchureh Hunt Club's race meeting at Riccarton to-day provided very interesting contests. Although three winners were first favourites and another, the Auclilander Horowhenua was second favourite, dividends in other events were very substantial. Ezywurk, winner of the second division of the Aylesbury Trot, was a rank outsider. Ventrnc, with whom Dismiss •was bracketed, also paid a surprisingly large price in winning the Brabazon Handicap- In the- Inst event, the Kirwee Trot, Cam Dillon, who was favourite for the 'earlier trotting race and failed, narrowly defeated the warm first fancy, Gamble.

Arcade scored decisively in the Longbeach Hurdles. The totalisator handled £8377 (win '£3029, place £4448), compared with £7793, an increase of £584. Only Two Start. The enforced withdrawal of Wykemist left only two starters in the Hunt Cup, and there was scarcely any betting. Witui was favourite. The pair kept together throughout. Marco Polo jumped shakily early, but improved. Witui drew away in the run home and won by live lengths. Peterette's Steeplechase. A good display of jumping was given "by the field of four in " the Lawford Hunters' Steeplechase. Royal Buck and Andy shared the leadership for a mile, with Willow Glen last. After crossing Cutts' fence Peterette took second place to Royal Buck, but at the seven furlongs Royal Buck led from Willow Glen and Peterette. Royal Buck led over the second last fence ■ from Peterette, but the latter crossed the last fence in charge and • went on to win by two lengths. Peterette won the Waimate Hunt. Club Steeplechase ten days ago anil rah, second and third at Washdyke last Saturday. He is engaged in the Grand National Steeplechase.

.." " The Aylesbury Trot. In an interesting finish in the first division of the Aylesbury Trot Great Seaman beat Wink Eye by a length, with Sky Wink four lengths away third. Floodlight, Thornworthy, Happi, Cam Dillon, and Betty Jinks, were next. In a hard finish all down the straight in the second division Ezywurk managed to reach the judge a head in front of Silver Axworthy; with Starvale a head further away third. Close up came Shoer lace,. ; : General Sarsfieh}, and Golden Crosslin,;; •-■■■■/ : - ■■.--■'-■- ' ---"f The CamDillon-Te Kinga bracket was favourite on the win machine with £82, and £58 10/ on the place machine./ The Great Seaman - Handicapper bracket carried £52 "and £47 10/. . Ezywurk was entrusted with £4 10/ and £6 10/, the Starvale-Wink Eye bracket carried £58 and £00 10/, and Silver Axworthy £16-10/ and £16 10/. ;'■.;■ Backers on the Mark. » Despite the size of the field, backers were, tfn the mark in the' Maiden Stakes. They\made Top Rank (£154 10/ and £111) and Scratchmere Seai» (£O4 10/ and £04 10/) ..chief fancies. Top. Rank led on to the course proper, where . Moonbeam came strongly to throw out a challenge, with Scratchmere Scar also in the picture. Top Rank, however, won by two lengths from Moonbeam, with Scratchmere Scar a neck away. Milnrow was fourth. Top Rank'was first home in the Moreton Hack Handicap at Ashburton on June 23, but lost, the race on the ground of interference.

Arcade's Victory in Hurdles. Arcade, who won the South Canterbury Steeplechase last Saturday all the way, scored a somewhat similar win in the Longbeach Hurdles. He is not engaged in the Grand National Steeplechase, hut he is in the Grand National Hurdles at 9.0. Royal Lineage (£153 and £105) and Verden (£llß 10/ and £11'3 10/) were the popular fancies. Arcade and Verden were the early pacemakers, and when they reached the back Arcade was a length ahead of Verden, with Eoyal Lineage next, ten lengths away. Then came Hounslow, Pleasant Memory, Royal 'Limond, Pahu, Starshooter, Billy Boy and Transact, with Fleeting Glance last. Arcade led into the straight and was first over the last hurdle from Verden, Royal Limond (who blundered and unseated his rider) and Eoyal Lineage. Arcade went on full or running and won by four lengths from-Royal Lineage, with Verden two lengths away. Pahu was fourth, then came Pleasant Memory, Transact and Hounslow, with Billy Boy last. Arcade, ' who carried £35 10/ and £00 10/, is trained by J. Tomkinson for the wellknown trotting trainer E. C. McDermott. Winter Cup Trial. t Sixteen Winter Cup candidates were included in the twenty-three starters for the Brabazon Handicap. The favourites were Rebel Star ( £142 and £10G) and t Slippery (£74 10/ and £02). Sweet Haulbowline, and Princess Doreen began smartly, but the first-named met with interference at the half mile, where Haulbowline was clear of Princess Doreen, with Ventrac, Rebel Star, .and Dismiss next. Haulbowline led into the straight from Ventrac, Princess Doreen, Rebel Star, Slippery, Some Shamble, &nd Davolo. Ventrac challenged Haulbowline and got his head in front a furlong from home. They fought out a keen finish, Ventrac winning by a neck, with Duvolo, who finished strongly on the outside, half a length away. Then came Giggleawick, Some Shamble, Sweet Agues, and Slippery. The VentracDismiss bracket curried only £13 and £27 10/. An Auckland Success. For! the Kennels Handicap Star Raider (£lO3 10/ and £110), Horowhenua ' (£lO7 10/ and £110), and Nightforin (£l5B and... £120)- were the popular fancies. llorowhenua ■ led ''off from Maroha, but Lycidas ran to the frontat the mile from Horowhen.ua, Nighf Parade, Sibella, Jerry Boy, Maroha, and Star Raider, with .Nighlfonn ' "laet. Lycidas led at the half mile from Sibella, Horowhenua, Night Parade,

Jerry Boy, and Eaton Hall. Lycidas was first round the home turn, but once in the straight Horowhenua took charge. Nightform and Star Raider finished well, but Horowhenua Won by a length and a half from Nightform, with Star Raider a neck away. Additional results:— LAWFORD HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE of £ 70.
