The passing of sentences on the !)2 seamen, firemen and trimmers who were convicted on Saturday for refusal to obey orders was further deferred till to-morrow, pending a conference between representatives of the shipping companies and the Seamen and Firemen's Union. A settlement of the dispute is expected. Most of the men, when charged on Saturday, pleaded not guilty, and the Union Company did, not prese for a penalty if the men were prepared to take the ehips to sea. Otherwise the maximum penalty was asked for. Mr. Gray, ■ for the men, said they were prepared to take out the ships if the wage cuts were restored. All of the men were convicted, and sentence was deferred until to-day to permit of seamen attending the funeral yesterday of a member of the Kaimai's crew, who died ill hospital from pleurisy.

NINE SHIPS AT WESTPOET.

CANOPUS AND KIWITEA READY. (By Telegraph.'— Press Association.) WESTPORT, Sunday. The position at Wcstport in connection with the shipping dispute is unaltered. There are nine vessels in port, including the Fiscus, an overseas steamer, and the Te Arohn, both of which are unaffected by the shipping hold-up. The Canopus and the Kiwitea are both loaded and ready to sail.
