GERMAN GUILT.

BITING COMMENT.

"NAZI NAME STINKS."

Moral Responsibility for

Murder.

AMBASSADOR INTERVENES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 1.80 p.m.) RUGBY, July 27. Temporary leadership of the Austrian Government has been entrusted to Prince von Starhemberg, the Heimwehr leader. The failure of the Nazi coup was complete owing to the refusal of the Austrian people to respond.

There is considered to be no immediate prospect of international complications, which will only bo likely to arise if any foreign country endangers Austria's independence.

Commenting on the situation, "The Times" says the full story of Dr. Dollfuss' end, deprived as he was of medical and spiritual aid, "is making the name of Nazi stink in the nostrils of the world," as "a system which flourishes on such methods inspires loathing and disgust everywhere."

"The Times" observes that the conduct of the German Government since the events in Austria has been strictly correct and it- very wisely dissociated itself from the abortive rebellion.

It announced that it would summarily arrest any rebels who crossed the German frontier from Austria in accordance with arrangements negotiated by the German Minister in Vienna, Herr Keith, and the German Minister himself had been recalled to Berlin for having sanctioned the arrangement.

"But why," asks, "The Times," "was he in particular the Intermediary between the rebels and the Austrian authorities? Surely no German din-lo-in at would take so conspicuous a responsibility without feeling certain that his Government would approve hits conduct if successful, and, in any case, quite openly.

"Night after night the official wireless operated from Munich flooded Austria with instigations to get rid of Dr. Dollfuss.

"Many of the munitions employed in the Nazi terrorist campaign in Austria have borne the label of the German Army Weapon Office at Charlottenburg. Subversive literature distributed in Austria had been brought over from Germany.

"On the facts of the case and on account of Tier precepts and examples, Germany cannot be absolved of some moral responsibility." King George Represented. Sir Walford Selby, British Minister to Vienna, will represont the King at the funeral of Dr. Dollfuss. Although Austrian Government forces encountered resistance to-day from bands of Nazis in Styria and Corinthia, the authorities declare that this merely represents the "cleaning-up" process and that the back of the revolt has been broken.

AS A HUMAN BEING. AMBASSADOR'S INTERFERENCE. (Received 2 p.m.) BERLIN, July 27. Herr Reith declares he did not mediate between Dr. Dollfuss' murderers and the Austrian Cabinet Ministers,, but merely received as a witness the agreement already concluded without his knowledge.

He did not act at the behest of the troops, but in conformity with the desire of the Austrian Government in order to prevent the shedding of the captives' blood.

He adds: "I acted not as Minister Plenipotentiary, but as a human being."
