IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY.

I beg to endorse entirely the report of the United Kingdom and Now Zealand Representatives' Association on tSo iron industry. None of the members of the association is. known to me. For many years (1900-22) my duties as inspecting; engineer of Xew Zealand mines were connected with the proposed or suggested exploitation of the limonito ("'0 per cent) ironstone deposit.? at Parapara and Onakaka, near Collingwood, Xelson. and I invariably condemned such proposals as offering not the least prospect of success by reason of the high cort of production, emallnese of possible market, outside competition and patchy nature of the deposits. In the distant future no doubt they will be worked, but at present I consider the proposal absurd, for with Government financial assistance amounting to over 170,000, the late operators, the Omikaka Company, went into liquidation. Having •served an apprenticeship as mining engineer with Messrs. Bell Bros., of Middlos'borough, subsequently amalgamated with Messrs. T>orman, Long and Company, I Jiave practical knowledge of this subject. FRANK REED, 'M.lnsiMM. (Loud.),
