RENOVATIONS IN DUNEDIN. J NEW SPAR AT AUCKLAND. ' (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.* DUNEDIN, this day. ! Engine repairs to Rear-Admiral Byrd's expedition ships the Bear of Oakland and the Jacob Ruppert, which have been laid up at Dunedin and Port Chalmers since their return from the ice, are well I under way. The foremast of the Bear I of Oakland was lifted out yesterday in c prepartion for stepping a new one. The 1 new spar, which arrived at Auckland f from Puget Sound by the Wairuna, is I a Douglas lir, 78ft long and 4\ft in I diameter. £ Only one mill in the Dominion is able a to carry out the cutting work, on o account of the length, and the log will v be squared to appropriate size at Auck- £ land. The mast will be brought to Dun- I edin by the Waipiato and stepped by r using an electric crane. A new jibboom r will also be shipped, and new rigging I will arrive from New York by the Tapti. t Mr. Lincoln Elsworth's ship, the t Wyatt Earp, will leave here next month c for South America. J
