CHAMBER MUSIC.

SOCIETY'S SECOND CONCERT. There wae a good attendance at the Lewis Eady Hall last evening, when the Auckland Chamber Music Society gave its second concert of the season. The programme opened with Mendelssohn's beautiful Trio in D minor, played by Miss Helen Gray (violin), Miss Marjqrie Tiarks ('cello) and Mr. Eric Waters (piano). The melodious, but somewhat melancholy, first movement was played with breadth; the wistful andante—a song without words— was noteworthy for tasteful work by the pianist; both the scherzo and the finale were given a virile performance, while there was a pleasing warmth of tone in, the strings throughout the complete rendition. A "Sonata for Piano and Violin," by Gruillaume Lekeu, followed, played by Mr. Eric Waters (piano), Mr. Haydn Murray (violin). This lyrical work, which is rather : more of a "fantasy" than a eonata, was neatly played, the "Tres Lent" movement, in which the violinist displayed a beautiful tone, being, perhaps, the most enjoyable. A well-balanced performance of Schubert's melodious "Quintet in A major" (Forellen Quintet, "The Trout"), a succession of lovely airs, brought the concert to a close. The players, Mr. Haydn Murray (violin), Miss Letty Walls (viola), Miss Lalla Hemue ('cello), Mr. Eric Waters (piano) and Mr. Karl Engel (bass), gave a straight-forward performance, clean and orderly, and in doing so observed the golden rule for chamber music players. "If you have something to say, say it; if you haven't, be inconspicuous." Mention should be made of the excellent work at the piano by Mr. Eric Waters, to whose lot it fell to play in all three performances of the evening and who was largely responsible for the excellent balance in these. One pleasing feature of the evening was the appreciation shown by the audience, an encouraging indication that more and more people are awakening to the beauties of this form of musical expression.
