BRIDGE PARTY.
IN MISS BATTEN'S HONOUR.
A bridge party, in appreciation of Miss J»an Batten's achievement, was held yesterday in the Milne and Choyce reception hall, a representative gathering of Auckland women being present. Miss Batten sent a telegram expressing her regret at being unable to be present.
Mrs. Victor Macky, in welcoming the large gathering, said that the women of New Zealand owed Miss Batten a debt, from the publicity point of view, and also that achievements such as hers helped definitely to banish the age-old prejudice against women being other than domestic drudges. It was such women as Miss Batten, who had made it possible for women to take a place in the artistic, the scientific, and the religious life of the world. She had the same pioneering spirit, and other women would be able to follow where she had led.
Mrs. Donald McDonald was conveuer of the meeting, assisted by an able committee, including Mrs. Victor Macky, Mrs. A. O'-Yeili, Mrs. C. Woollams, Mrs. 15. Goldwatcr, and the Misses Doris and Elva McDonald. Tlie following, hostesses had arranged tables: Lady Sinclair Lockhart. Mesdames Milburn, Victor M-acky, Bruce Mackenzie, John Alexander, E.
