ENGLAND'S TEAM.

FARNES GOES OUT. Five New Players in the Thirteen Probables. E. CLARK REAPPEARS. United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON', July 1. The team selected to play for England in the third Test cricket match against Australia, at Manchester, starting on Friday, is to be taken from: —• R. E. Wyatt (captain), C. F. Walters, G. O. Allen, H. Sutcliffe, W. R. Hammond, E. Hendren, M. Leyland, L. E. I Ames, H. Verity, G. Macaulay, E. Clark, W. W. Keeton, and J. L. Hopwood. This coterie of players includes only eiglit of those who participated in the second Test match at Lord's. Geary, Fames and Bowes are the players who have been omitted—all leading bowlers. G. O. Allen (fast bowler and good batsman, of Middlesex), G. Macaulay (medium pace bowler and good batsman, of Yorkshire), E. Clark (faiit left-hand bowler, of Northants), W. W. Keeton (a steady defensive batsman, of Notts), and J. L. Hopwood (right-hand batsman, and left-hand medium pace bowler, of Lancashire) are the newcomers. It seems likely that Clark will take Fames' place in the side, and either Macaulay or Hopwood will replace Geary. Use of Allen or Keeton will probably depend largely on the weather conditions. Clark would have been played in the first Test but for an injury just prior to the match, when playing in a trial game.

LOW SCORES. Surrey Out Cheap to Grimmett And McCabe. BRADMAN GOES EARLY. LONDON, July 1. The Australian cricketers yesterday began a match against Surrey at The Oval. The county was represented by the following:—Holmes (captain), Fender, Allom, Brown, Sandham, Gregory, Squires, Barling, Brooks, Gover and Watts. W. M. Woodfull, the Australian captain, has a heavy cold and did not play. Bradman led the team. Others who stood out were Wall, O'Reilly, Oldfield and Chipperfield. Surrey won the toss and batted in fine, hot weather. When stumps 'were drawn tlie county had been dismissed for 175 runs and Australia had made 136 for three wickets. Surrey's comparatively poor total on the almost perfect wicket, the deadly bowling of Grimmett and McCabe, and Bradman's further failure, were the outstanding features of the first day. Sandham and Gregory opened Surrey's first innings. Sandham was out to a deceptive ball from McCabe. Squires survived four balls from Grimmett, and was stumped off the fifth. It seemed to be a happy relief. Grimmett got Barling legbefore. The-batting so far.was an uncommonly bad display for such a powerful batting side. Grimmett, however, was almost unplayable, his rest having done him a lot of good. Holmes showed some spirited batting and then Ebeling, who was bowling a splendid length, got his middle stump with an in-swinger. The score at the luncheon interval was 49 for four wickets. Grimmett dismissed F. Brown in his second over after luncheon. Gregory remained solidly on the defensive but could not master Grimmett. McCabe ended Gregory's dull, unimpressive innings at 48. The same bowler scattered Fender's stumps and bowled Allom in the same over. Grimmett lured Watts out a little farther each time and finally he was well caught at mid-on. Brooks once turned a complete somersault in attempting to play Grimmett, off whom he got several fine boundaries. Ebeling finally obtained liis wicket.

Gover and Brooks played a tantalising last wicket partnership and added 02 in 50 minutes. Twenty thousand spectators were present when the Australians opened their first innings. Brown and Ponsford maintained a rate of one run a minute. Then Brown was out leg-before to Allom at 34. He had given a less distinguished display than usual. Ponsford had two narrow escapes when facing F. Brown. Darling continued to bat aggressively. 'He was splendidly caught off Fender at mid-on in attempting a big hit. Bradman, full or zest, punished Gover, but was dismissed just before stumps were drawn in trying to turn a fast ball from Holmes to leg. He liad hit four fours. Scores:— SURREY.—First Innings.
