SAVIDAN AGAIN.
ANNUAL ROAD RACK ONEHUNGA TO AUCKLAND. The fourth annual road race, promoted by the Technical College Old Boys' Athletic Club was run on Saturday, starting from the Onchunga Post Office, and finishing opposite the Union Steam Ship Co.'s olliees in Quay Street. The race was won by Auckland's Empire Games champion long distance runner, J. W. Savidan. who took the lend shortly after the start, finishing 38s ahead of ,T. Valder (Papatoetoe), with Neil (Technical O.B.) third, 3s later. The sealed handicap was won by P. R. Shine (Technical 9.30), with A. Maginness (Wesley 12.30) second, and J. Spooner (Wesley 12.15) third.
"The teams race was won by the narrow margin of one point by Papatoetoo Club, whose score was 82 points, Auckland A 33 points, anil Technical A 04 points third. The S3 starters were dispatched by Mr. T. H. Wilson from in front of the Onehunga I'ost Office shortly after 3 p.m. The course was up Queen Street, Onehunga, following the tram line to the top of St. Stephen's Avenue, Parnell. where the runners branched off, going down the avenue
into Gladstone Road and on to the waterfront road, where they had a straight run in of three-quarters of a mile to the finishing line in Quay Street. Shortly after the start Savidan went into the lead with his long swinging stride, and turning into Trafalgar- Street he led Mill and Valder by 20yds. On the way to the Royal Oak Savidan made steady gain, passing the monument 7.40 out, with Mill, Briggs and Valder nearest. At Greenwood's Corner Savidan had increased his lead to over 100 yds, being now 12.25 out. Nell, Valder and Mill were next in this order. Savidan passed Ranfurly Road intersection 17.35 out, with a lead of 200 yds from Briggs, who was 20yds ahead of Valuer, followed by Neil, Pinson and Nicholson. Valder replaced Briggs before reaching Newmarket.
At the foot of Ivhyber Pass Savidan was steadily outpacing the field, being now 23.50 out. Briggs was over 30s behind, followed by Valder, Neil, Nicholson and Pinson.
Turning into the avenue Savidan, 27.40 out, was well ahead of Valder, who now led Briggs 'by two yards, with Nicholson in fourth place. At the turn of Gladstone Road into the waterfront road, Savidan's time was 35.10, and from here he ran steadily to the linish. The finish was timed:— J. W. Savidan (A), 37.11 1 J. Nicholson, 37.07 4 Briggs, 38.17; Pinson, 38.59; Hill, 39.0; Littler, 39.22; McKenzie, 39.53; Barker, 39.55; Hewitson, 40.1; Haszard, 40.6; Francis, 40.XG. The teams race resulted :—Papatoetoe A.H. and C. Club (Valder, C. Littler, Maczenzle and Francis), 32 points, 1; Auckland A (J. W. Savidan, K. Pinson, A. Hill and 11. T. McNeil), 33 points, 2; Technical A, 64 points; Lynndalo, 6S points; University, 75 points; Presbyterian, 86 points; Wesley, 134 points; Auckland B, 16:2 points; Technical B, 178 points. The handicap race for the Metropolitan Cup was won by P. It. Shine, whose net timewas 32.17, A. Maginncss, second, 32.45, and J. Spooner, third, 33m.
