MAKE A GASWORKS.
ON A SMALL SCALE. (Sent in by George Skinner, Bradford Street, Waihi; age 11.) With a clear tobacco pipe and a small piece of coal, It is possible to make an experiment showing how the gas is made with which houses and streets arc lighted. Put the coal into the bowl of the pipe and cover it over with soft clay. Then put the pipe in the fire ! with {ho stem sticking out between the ', bars of the grate. In a short while ■ gas, mixed with steam and vapour, will 1 be seen issuing from tho hole in the ' stem, and if a lighted match is held close to the mouthpiece the gas will take lire and burn for some time. This is exactly what happens at a gasworks. ' Coal is put into large iron retorts and ; heated. The gas escapes through a ! tube and coke remains behind. -But, . as tho gas is very impure, being mixed ; with tar and many other substances, it • has to be cleansed by passing through » water and acids before it can bo used
