LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

I was very surprised to sec that the Government, in making new appointments to the> Legislative Council, had not thought it necessary to appoint one or more women, and thus make the council much more representative. For some years now women have played an important part in local government and educational matters, and the electors of Lyttelton elected Mrs. McCombs to represent them in the House, so that the appointment of one or two women to the Legislative Council would have been fitting in every way. For some reason many people had assumed that this would he done Avhen the Government, claiming to ho national in its outlook, came to consider the new appointments, and. there will he general disappointment that it has let this splendid opportunity pass. PKOGILESSIVE.
