HARBOUR CONTROL.

PROGRESS OF DREDGING.

WATER FOR SHIPPING.

Good progress is being made with the work of dredging the basin between Queen's and Prince's wharves, and over 40,000 cubic yards of sludge have been lifted since the job was commenced on April 11, according to a report received by the Auckland Harbour Board at its meeting yesterday afternoon. Drainage Proposal.-—The Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board advised that the Harbour Board's letter asking that immediate action be taken to establish a metropolitan drainage district and board had been formally received, and would be considered when the local authorities who were likely to become involved had expressed their opinions as to the desirability of proceeding with the scheme. New Power Line.—The Franklin Electrict Power Board stated that it proposed to connect its power lines between Waiau Pa Point and Te Tora Point, Manukau Harbour, by means of an 11,000-volt cable under the water. The harbourmaster reported that there would be no objection to permission being granted from a navigation point of view, provided that the line of cable was marked by two beacons on the western shore, and that an area of 300 ft on each side of the line was gazetted as a prohibited.anchorage. Lease of Premises.—Concerning the lease of premises at 20, Customs Street East, it was decided, on the recommendation of the board in committee, that fresh tenders should be called for a period of 21 years, and that the work of altering the building to suit the requirements of Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, Ltd., should be authorised. Largo New Building.—ln regard to the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company's proposal re the renewal of leases, a recommendation of the finance committee, part of which was as follows, was adopted: "That the company be informed that, on their assurance that they will proceed immediately with the erection of a building estimated to cost £30,000, and subject to a valuation to ascertain tho board's interest in the existing buildings, the board is willing to allow the present leases to be surrendered, and a fresh lease to be issued for the balance of the term of »the existing lease (34 years)."

Defence Wharf.—A letter from the Defence Department stated that the Defence wharf at Devonport appeared to be in need of a comprehensive overhaul, and asked if the board would have an estimate of the necessary repairs prepared. The matter was referred to the board in committee. Conversion of Loans. —The. A.M.P. Society, re loans of £50,000 and £100,000, payable in Sydney, stated that the society was prepared to arrange conversion, and set out the terms upon which the offer was based. "I think this is rather generous of them, as they arc not compelled to do it," commented the chairman, Mr. T. B. Clay, in moving that the letter be referred to the finance committee. Water for Ships.—Concerning water supplied to shipping, the City Council advised that it had decided to reduce the price to the board to 1/6 per 1000 gallons, provided the board would retail the water to shipping at a price not. exceeding 3/ per 1000 gallons. The matter was referred to the board in committee. ••.''.
