WIDESPREAD FLOODS.
DEVASTATION IN INDIA. CALCUTTA, June 24. Many lives have been lost and thousands of people are homeless aa the result of widespread floods in Eastern Bengal and Assam. The floods were caused by several days of incessant torrential rain. Railway lines and bridges have been destroyed and agricultural land inundated. A downpour of rain in the Himalayan foothills is proving of unprecedented severity. It is taking heavy toll of jungle life. f Carcases of elephants, tigers and leopards have been' observed in the Bramaputra River.
