THEATRICAL MANAGER.

CLYDE MEYNELL PASSES. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 19. The death is recorded of Mr. Clyde Meynell, the well-known theatrical manager, at the age of 07. An Englishman by birth, Clyde Meynell gained success for some years on the i-iondon stage, until he was sent to manage a company organised by Sir Herbert Tree, to present "The Darling of the Gods," "Resurrection" and "The Eternal City" in Australia under the J. C. Williamson aegis. He remained in Australia to manage the Julius Knight-Maude Jefferies company, then entered into a theatrical partnership with Sir Rupert Clark and John Gunn, presenting the original Oscar Asche production "Kismet" and such Shakespcuro revivals as "Othello'' and "The Taming of the Shrew." This enterprise also staged Tom Walls' first Australian offering of "The Arcadians," with "Miss Hook of Holland" also on the programme. He merged his company with J. C. Williamson, Ltd., of which he became managing director. He sold out and retired in 1924. He also managed certain enterprises for E. J. Carroll, the well-known Australian entrepreneur. He had a likeable personality, and was keenly interested in horse racing. It was said of him that he could tell by memory alone the breeding of any horse that ever ran in England or Australia. A story is told of how he bet £500 011 a horse in the Derby, and won, but that belongs to another raconteur.
