PRAYERS FOR RAIN. Thirst Maddened Rats Attack Sleeping Children. NEW HORROR OF DRY SPELL. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, June 17. The Bishop of London announced that he desired prayers for rain to be offered in every London church to-day. The "Sketch" says that monster rats, thirst maddened because of the ponds that have dried up, arc invading Essex cottages and. attacking children. The latest case is reported from Hartfordeiid, where James Petchey, a farm labourer, was awakened by screams and had to beat off rats. He found his two sons badly bitten on the hands and arms, and the bed covered with blood. A special drought committee for London has been appointed by the Metropolitan Water Board. The chairman of the board, Sir William Prescott, stated that this step was necessary to ensure prompt action in regard to drought matters that might arise within the next few weeks.
