"POKER" BRIBES.
AMERICAN SCANDAL. Alleged Corruption in Army Air Department. LARGE SUMS TO OFFICIALS. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 12.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 17. A Congressional committee, after four months of investigation of the Military Aviation Department, issued a sensational report to-day, charging corruption and inefficiency in the purchases of aircraft and equipment, "endangering adequate national defence," without charging dishonesty. The committee recommended that Major-General Benjamin Foulois, chief of the Army Air Corps, be removed for "gross misconduct and inefficiency." It is claimed that he was largely responsible for the army's fiasco in carrying the air mail. During the committee's hearing it was intimated that the home flying officials were receiving bribes from 'plane manufacturers for favouring their products. This was conveyed in devious manners. It was alleged that in several cases manufacturers' representatives engaged officials in "friendly games" of poker and almost invariably lost large sums.
