WAGES DISPUTE.
MEN FROM MONOWAI. QUSTION OF DOMICILE. TRANSPORT TO HOMES C-AIMED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this clay. Consequent on (lie. action of the master of the Monowai giving 24 hours' notice to tlie cooks and stewards, a dispute lias arisen in regard to payment of wages to those men who are not domiciled in Wellington. The men did not sirrn off the Monowai. hut wcvg diecharged by the master j;iviii£ 24 hours' notice of the termination of the service of the men, on the ground that they had refused to obey a lawful command and had combined to impede the voyage of the ship. The men, on the other hand, etate that consequent on the action of 44 cooks and stewards giving statutory notice, the vessel was short-handed and failed to comply with the provisions of the Shipping and. Seamen Act. in that it did not contain a galley cook, and therefore if they had proceeded to sea a breach of the Act would have been committed. They therefore claim that they are entitled to be sent back to their home ports at the expense of the company, according to the endorsement on tlie ship's articles. Twenty-six of the men belong to Sydney, 10 to Auckland, and two to Dunedin. Tlie 44 who gave notice all have their homes in Wellington.
