NEW LYNN RELIEF.

SUSTENANCE ALTERNATIVE. STATEMENT BY MR. SLAUGHTER. For the New Lynn registered unemployed who decline co-operative contract work at Lawson Park, and who Will not seek work in country camps at remunerative rates, there U etill the alternative of sustenance at the rates laid down recently, according to a statement made last ni™M by Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of unemployment in the Auckland district. Applications for sustenance may be made to the postmaster at New Lynn. Mr..Slaughter.lntimated that the offer of work under the co-operative contract system was still open. "If the Borough Council will undertake this work on the co-operative contract basis.," he said, "the position will be that, the number of men who can be economically employed having been fixed by the council, the work will be laid out by the council's engineer. The men will work on a true co-operative basis, forming their own gangs and arranging the work among themselves, the only condition being that the work muet be carried out to the satisfaction of the Borough Council, which will continue under the ordinary No. 5 rules to act as the employing authority. The work will be measured by the, engineer in charge. "The schedule of prices has been fixed on a liberal basis, and will obtain until the job is completed. One of the objections raised on behalf of the men is that it will be open to the Department to reduce the rates once the job has started, but no such reduction will' take place. The allocation of £4800 for the work on Laweon Piirk has been made on the rates agreed upon and will be expended. "The amount the men will be able to earn on this co-operative contract work is precisely the same as they could earn working their full ration of time under the present No. 5 scale. On the liberal prices fixed they should be able to earn that amount by working less time than would be required on ordinary No. 5 work."
