FRUIT CONFERENCE.
Empire Marketing Discussed In London. DECISIONS REACHED. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 13. The Empire Fruit Conference has concluded. A communique stated that an arrangement was made to improve the distribution of apples and pears in Britain without increasing tho retail prices. It was agreed to urge growers throughout the Empire to adopt a standard of packing and grading, a nomenclature that would eliminate undesirable varieties, and to ensure regular supplies of the best Empire fruit. It was decided to establish a permanent London Committee of the Associated Empire Producers' Organisation to maintain and develop co-operation. The British delegate said that it was realised in England that a market for the whole Empire in respect of apples and pears anticipated closer co-operation in the future. The "Sun-Herald" news service learns that the National Farmers' Union will shortly approach the Government in search of increased protection. Inter alia, it is stated that the fruit action follows last year's apple shipments from Australia and New Zealand, particularly the latter, which continued until late August, thus depressing the market for home-grown fruit.
