TRIALS AT ELLERSLIE.

PREPARING FOR WAIPA. GOOD EFFORT BY VEHSANT. FIRST LAP ALSO GOES WELL. After a very heavy frost overnight, the weather was perfect for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, when several horses with engagements at the Waipa meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday were given their final gallops- No. 1 grass track was available, the going after the recent rain being holding. No. I Grass. Horowhenua and Wee Muek were sprinted half a mile, and after running their first furlong in 13s, they completed the task in 535. There was little between them at the finish. Versant, Karangapai and Moonflect were associated over six furlongs. When they Jumped off Versant ran on to the sand track, which is alongside, and went for fully three furlongs before getting back on the grass. After | turning into the straight he had the other j pair beaten, and was casing up at the finieh. The first three furlonge were covered in 39 4-ss, and the full distance in 1.20 4-5. Versant, who was ridden by his trainer, G. Holland, covered a lot of extra ground, and it was an impressive! Eallop on his part. Lord Val, after commencing slowly over a round, was under restraint to run his last six furlongs in 1.26 4-5. Parkhurst, a Surveyor gelding in A. Morrow's stable, and Gay Sol, a halfbrother to Sleepy Sol, strode home from ■the five-furlong poet in 1.12 4-5. Both these novices are on the improve. Hawthorn worked over half a mile, going a shade, better than 15s to the furlong. Over a similar distance, . Sir Val and Jewelled Girdle, were going well within themselves while registering 56 l-ss. The Whirlwind —Cradle Song filly and The Broker were given au easy two furlongs, which they covered in 44 4-ss. The Whirlwind filly is a half-sister to Hushing, but ie not nearly so good actioned, but she is still very green, and should improve. First Lap was responsible for a good effort over a round, running the distance in 1.54 2-. 1 ). She ran her last six furlongs in 1.21 3-5, and the final three furlongs in 40 2-ss, being assisted over the latter distance by Jalldy Karo. Firet Lap was ridden by L. Clifford, who will be on her in the Woodstock Stakes on Saturday. He will also ride Rose Lupin. Other horses to do useful work were Gay ..Broney, . Wee Pat, Master Rex. United. Neil, Zane Grey, Free Air and King Musk.
