CONSIDERATE COMPETITORS.

NOVEL PUZZLE ACCORDED GOOD RECEPTION. PICTURE RIDDLE ARRANGED TO-DAY. Dear Boys and Girls,— An entirely new competition, the recent "ate" puzzle received an enthusiastic reception from Budgetites, scores of entries being received. One cannot help remarking upon the neatness of the entries, for this week competitors seemed to realise that the judges would have a difficult task and did their best to help by setting out their papers in the best possible way. Probably the easiest entries to read were those in which the inserted words were written in red ink, although those printed in large capitals were also easily distinguished. Careless entries were difficult to correct, for there were a few who scrawled out their replies, underlining only some of the words inserted. One competitor did not even take the trouble to rewrite the paragraph, but merely scribbled in the words on a cutting from the paper. No one succeeded in obtaining the entirely correct solution, the best efforts containing five mistakes. By far the greater number of "ates" in the paragraph could not be replaced by any other word which would convey the same shade of meaning and at the same time read smoothly. In one or two cases, however, a second word could be substituted, and such were counted as correct. Satiate, for example, was allowed instead of sate. Both M. Dale and Enid Faris made only live mistakes and in making the awards the accompanying riddles were taken into consideration. To select the remaining two cash prize winners from the nine competitors whose entries contained six errors the merit of the accompanying conundrums was again considered and preference given accordingly. Solving ordinary riddles is good fun, but a conundrum in pictures is an even more entertaining proposition, £f} -j for you have to work out the question >^T , j - before you answer it. Heavy entries fl/ f N^^^A J are expected for to-day's competition, D/J^^ so please send yours in as soon as V^V^^*^ possible.
