The British Empire extends to 14,000,000 square miles. It is 116 times bigger than the British Islee, and 280 times bigger than England. It contains 450,000,000 people —one-quarter of the population of the world. Ancient empires were not to be compared with ours. The Roman Empire, at its largest, was only half as big as Brazil, or as big as Queensland and West Australia combined.
