CHINESE TRICKED.
TRANSACTION IN SILK. WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. How a Fijian woman tricked a Chinese merchant was explained in the Police Court to-day, when Materia Simmonds, a domestic, aged 37, pleaded guilty to the 'theft of silk garments valued at £45, the property of Hop Yick Cheong. The chief detective said accused went to complainant's shop and said she had £100 to spend on her daughter, who was about to be married. The Chinese parceled up the silk, and then the woman said she felt sick. Complainant hastened to the back of the shop for a glass of water, but when he returned the woman was gone. So was the silk. She was arrested later at New Brighton. The magistrate sentenced the woman, who, the police reported, had previous convictions, to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
