WINTER BOWLING.

PROGRAMME CARRIED OUT. SOLDIERS ON" THE GREEN. THE EMPIRE GAMES. (By TRUNDLER.). Conditions for winter bowling were far from ideal on Saturday, but the only interruption by rain was of very short duration, and it fortunately occurred just at the time when it was convenient to adjourn for a cup ot' tea. A small tournament was conducted at Ilillsboro', and progress was made in most cf the King's Birthday tournaments, some finding the winners. The winter challenge matches are receiving the usual active attention, not only the inter-club challenges that are of general interest, but also the purely club events, open only to members, nearly a dozen clubs having several of the latter. A very sporting attitude is usually adopted by the competitors in the open events, in suiting the convenience of each other, and this can generally be arranged it they take time by .the forelock, but it is not often that a change is necessary in several rounds, such as the jjlayers have made this year in the Edwin Stars. By mutual agreement two matches have already been played during the week, instead, of Saturday, and this is now happening for a third time. The holders could not play on Saturday, being engaged in the Mount Eden tournament, and the next challengers, an Epsom rink, could not conveniently play on any other day, but they willingly agreed to change placcs with Hillsboro', who are third on the list. The arrangement is. therefore, that tomorrow the West End holders will meet A. Sims, J. Clarke, S. W. Thompson, R. T. Sheppard (Hillsboro'), and they will be followed by R. Thomas (Mount Albert),

J. Wright. (Epsom) and A. C. Bush (Balmoral).

A complete reversal of form Mince the previous week was shown by the Epsom holders of the Denison Pins, in addition to which the luck seemed to run against them all the way. The Mount Eden visitors were 13 to Epsom's 1, and even this lead was increased as the game progressed, the final score showing: E. C. Delamore, A. S. Dignan, W. E. Vivian, I) C. Eraser (Mount Eden), challengers, 28.. v. C. Scott, F. W. Wilson, E. T. Richmond, H. A. Farland (Epsom) 13. As it happens, this loss to Epsom suits very well, for it leaves them free to play in the final of the King's Birthday tournament at. Auckland next Saturday. The next challengers are .T. A. Robertson (Waitemata), J. R. Lundon (Dcvonport) and A. Moon (To Papapa).

The third game in the newly-instituted challenge matches for the Diggers' Badges, provided another fine contest, the issue being in doubt until the last bowl was played. The game was 3 all, 4 all, G all and 14 all, the only change in a close competition being a run in favour of Pukekolie until they stopped at 13, while Oneliunga caught them up. However, the visitors built up almost an impregnable head on the twentieth, and lifted three points. Hosking making a win certain on the last head by drawing a toucher, which Ross just missed springing for the three that lie wanted for a tie, to hold the trophies. R. Bilkey, E. G. Moncrief. S. Bish, E. A. Hosking (Pukekohe), challengers. IS, v. F. Parnsworth, R. Cross, S. Vella, J. K. Ross (Oneliunga), holders, 14.

Mr. Vella callcd the Oneliunga platoon tc atten-"shun," congratulated the winners on their fine play and called for cheers. These were given by all the crowd present, and Mr. Hosking got his link to reciprocate with a similar compliment, besides intimating that they would be pleased to defend their trophies on the Oneliunga green next Saturday. The next challengers are P. Durrant, E. Chapman. G. Greenwood, J. Maud (Edendale), followed by H. L. .Toll (Ellerslie). A. Mason (Grey Lynn), G. N. Sainty (Hillsboro') and W. Ure (Auckland).

The "Iv.ZR.S.A. Review" for ' May describes a much larger function of this nature, which took place in Wellington i during the summer. After all that we have heard about. Admiral Sir Francis Drake and his historic game at Plymouth Hoe, it is quite refreshing to find that the Senior Service lias no monopoly in bowls, and that in Wellington, as in Auckland, the returned soldiers are flocking to the game. So they arranged a tournament, the entries being sp numerous that two greens were required. On the Wellington green the winning link comprised: Lieut- John Carswell. Machine Gun Corps; Corporal S. T. Tickner, 9th Essex Regiment; Gunner R. A. Chisholm, 12th Battery; Lieut.-Colonel W. H. Fletcher. 3rd Battalion. Wellington Regiment. On the Hutt green the winners were: Lieut.-Colonel H. E. Avery. N.Z. Div. H.Q.; Pte. Angus Duncan, 3rd Canterbury Infantry;' Sergeant R. F. Robinson, N"-Z. Rifle Brigade; Pte. S. Ingram, /Medical Corps. The final was played next day, and Colonel Fletcher's rink won by 24 to 17. after Private Ingram's rink had led by 10 to 1 at one stage.

The whole scheme was taken up with great enthusiasm when it was first suggested to Mr. W. Perry. Dominion vicepresident of the Returned Soldiers' Association, who is also president of the Wellington Bowling Centre. Colonel G. T. Hall, an old bowler, sent a circular to the clubs, inviting entries, and they were all surprised when they found 24 rinks entered. Mr. S. M. Stone then suggested a trophy for annual competition, to be provided by the surviving .presidents of the Wellington Centre since the first year of the war, and these not only presented a handsome cup, but also four miniatures for the individual winners. The donors are Messrs. E. J. Hill, W. C. Cooper, S. Potter, H. G. Mayer, Marcus Marks, S. M. Stone. M. J. Hodgins and W. Perry.-

The Jordan Pins provided quite hn interesting game, although it left the holders with a substantial surplus of points: A. Sims, J. Gregory, R. Buckle, S. W. Thompson (Hillsboro'l, holders, 22, v. G- H. Keeling, L. Brav, T. C. Schnackenei'g. T. S. Bassett (Onehunga). challengers. 17. A four and a three started off the holders with a nice lead, which they maintained until the visitors tied with a four on the sixteenth head, got three more on the seventeenth, and then did not score again.

The next challengers to meet Hillsboro' are Applevard, Reid, Watkin, Dawson (St. Helier's).

The Hallyburton-Johnstone Club are inviting entries for a pairs tourney on Wednesday.

Pennant bowling was reviewed in the Sports Edition on Saturday, and since that was written another interesting point of view has been presented by "Lame Bowler." His letter will be published shortly, with comments.

The athletes who left on Saturday to take part in the Empire Games in London | were appropriately farewelled, but it j seems to liavo be'cn overlooked that bowling is to be just as much a part of the official programme as running and swimming. Our representatives did very well in the first series of Empire Games, held in Hamilton (Canada) four years ago, so the bowls section ought not to be ignored this -year. The rink comprised H. \V. Frost (Carlton), E- Leach (Manurewa), P. McWhannell and W. Fielding (Wellington), and if we had beaten England the whole five countries would have tied, the others being Scotland, Canada and South Africa. Similarly, in the pairs, where all competed except Scotland, England was our only trouble, for if we had beaten. them we would have been the absolute winners, and if we had beaten England in the singles we would have tied for first place. This .position is well worth pressing, for England paid the expenses of their seven representatives, all champions, and a repetition of such procedure would wreck the Empire Games in the bowla section, for all the other countries let their men pay their own expenses, and nobody would describe ourmen- a 8 -oaampiona, J
