FIVE MEN BEFORE COURT,

PALMERSTON N, this day. Arising out of a street incident on Saturday, when police prevented a procession by unemployed, five men were before the Court this morning. Ihose charged were Eric Anderson (22,) Frank Leo (32), Arthur William Beere (47), John Hansen (28) and Sydnoy John Rice.

Anderson, Lee and Becre were charged with obstructing the police while in the execution of their duty, Hansen with inciting persons to resist the police, and I\ice with using obscene language. AU were remanded on bail by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., till next Monday.

Inspector Eawle, for the police, said that Rice's case was different from the others.

In the cases of Anderson, Lee, Beere fl, ~ lanson a " font- accused were prohibited from attending demonstrations in the interim.

Though both police and municipal authorities had prohibited processions or demonstrations, an attempt was made on Saturday morning by the National Unemployed Workers' Movement to hold a procession. Men and women formed a procession in Rangitikei Street, which caused slight disorder. The footways were crowded with spectators, but before the sitution could develop the police had it under complete control. They made several arrests, to which some resistance 'was offered.

Following urgings by megaphone from an upstairs window in tlie building where the N.U.W.M. lias premises, n band of about 50, led by women, came from the building and proceeded up tlie footpath for a short distance. They tlien moved to the road, carrying banners, to form a procession. They were informed by a police sergeant that they must disband, but they attempted to proceed, whereupon constables who bad been patrolling the footpath came out to break up the demonstration. When resistance was offered, five men were arrested and taken to. the police station in motor cars.

The police, under Inspector Rawle, dealt speedily with events, and soon the conditions in the street were almost normal.
