At the French lawn tennis championships, in the doubles semi-finals Crawford and McGrath (Australia) defeated Menzcl " and Hecht (Czecho-Slovakia), 3_C, C —l, 6—l, 0—1; Borotra and Brugnon (France) defeated Quist and Turnbull (Australia), C—2, 14—12, C—2. In the mixed doubles semi-finals Quist and Miss Ryan defeated Crawford and Miss Seriven, C—2, 4—6, C—l. In the women's doubles semi-finals Misses Jacobs and Palfrey defeated Misses Noel and Jedzrcjowska, 6 —l, o—4. Menzcl and Heeht began very strongly against Crawford and McGrath, but at the beginning of the second set the Australians took control. Menzel and Hecht both failed to reproduce anything like the form they had shown against Perry and Hughes. Borotra and Brugnon displayed their old-time generalship in defeating Quist and Turnbull. The second set took an hour to play. Quist failed to win any of his first four services, and was also uncertain overhead throughout the match. Brugnon gave a brilliant display of driving. Warwick: First innings, 281 (Parsons 101); second, 247. Middlesex: First innings, 225; second, 184 (Paine five for 71). Warwick won by 119 runs.

Kent: First innings, four for 804, declared (Ashdown 333, Woolley 172, Ames 202 not out). Essex: First innings, 408 (Pope 100, O'Connor 105 not out); follow-on, 203 (Freeman six for 60). Kent won by an innings and 192 runs.

Sussex: First inings, five for 463, declared (J. Parks 160, Melville 105, James Langridge 88 not out).. Somerset: First innings, 140 (Tate four for 39); followon, 272 (J. Cornford six for 63). Sussex won by an innings and 51 runs.

Wallace, the Scottish artisan golfer who got to the final of the British amateur championship this year, has accepted an appointment as a playing professional with the Selsdon Park Club of Croydon, Montreal.

Wallace was an out-of-work tradesman of Troon, who entered for the British amateur championship in the hope _of doing sufficiently well to justify his making capital out of his golf skill by getting an appointment as a professional player.
