TAKANINI HORSES.

ARRIVAL OF IMPASTO. FOUR ADDITIONS TOE. POPE'S TEAM. GAY SHIELD COLT PLEASING. During the past -week E. Pope has received four additions to his team, the best known oi these being the -wellperformed Impasto, a gelding whose performances towards the autumn stamped him. as a colt likely to attain even higher honours than he has yet earned. Impasto was formerly trained by A. Cook at Te Awamutu, for the well-known sportsmen Messrs; McGovern and O'Donnell, in whose interests the High Art gelding will continue to race. Last Tuesday E. Pope received a Tea ' Tray—Par Money gelding named Tray Bit, a bay in colour, and rising three years old. This gelding is in nice condition to go ahead with a preparation, as he has the appaarance of being well done. Another arrival expected any day is a rising three-year-old filly from Gisborne, this being by Acre— Louisanna bv California. This filly is at present located at the Hauraki Plains, her journey from home having been divided into casv stages* Before the June meeting concludes this iilly will have joined Pope's stable. Last but not least of the newcomers is a filly named Memnon by Colossus—Symboline, owned by a Gisborne sportsman, but will race in different interests to the Acre filly previously mentioned. In fact, all 'four are new clients, and with the addition of this;quartet E. Pope's already strong team should prove a very strong combination for ■_ next season's racing. ' The team, exclusive of these four, is: Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde, a yearling full brother -to this pair, Alpinus, Model Girl, Diversion and The Hiker.

All has not been well with Expectancy during the last few days, and her withdrawal from Ellerslie engagements occasioned little surprise. It is believed that she was injured while contesting the Otorohanga Hack Handicap at Te Rapa, which was unfortunate, as the Lueullus filly was at her best, and was expected to take a. prominent part in engagements at Ellerslie.

J. A. Forsyth, who has concluded his apprenticeship to Trainer C. Morse, has 6igned on for an additional twelve months as an apprentice, but has transferred to J. L. Grav. Forsyth can go to the scale at seven stone, and this fact alone should ensure him riding, while during recent months he has shown improvement, and has piloted a couple of winners. He has not had many opportunities, but has acquitted himself well. Life Guard Spelling. Life Guard .is still in the paddock enjoving a respite, and this is a fairly good indication that his contemplated trip to the Wellington meeting next month will not eventuate. In a recent schooling bout over five fences Havering acquitted himself very well, showing a natural ability in his jumping. Although his advancing age may have-somewhat dulled his speed, there should be quite a lot of opportunities for him as a jumper, and as he has been nominated for. the Hack Hurdles at Waipa it will be interesting tojsee how he fares if taken to that fixture. His size, natural jumping ability, " and the speed he possesses should all enhance his prospects as a hurdler, and he is the type who should not need a great deal of experience before being seen at his best. Rerepai is now commencing to swing along in pacework, and is looking bright and healthy. The Paper Money colt was a winner, as a two-year-old during the present season, but just when he was at his best was unfortunately laid aside with foot trouble. He was not afterwards persevered with, and has enjoyed a long rest to enable him to thoroughly overcome the trouble. R. Miller is allotting Miramond and the Chief Ruler—Seagull gelding serviceable work, though both are not being hurried, and cannot be expected to be looking at their best yet. Miller has also broken in the two Tidal youngsters and the Chief Ruler—Podokes yearling, and all have settled down nicely.

Gallant Knight has not Tseen given any serious work yet, but is being exercised daily with sufficient light work to keep him bright and healthy. This fellow showed a lot of speed early in the year, but although he failed to get on the winning list, he gave the impression that he would be seen to better advantage with age. His progress from now on will be watched with interest.

Full Measure is looking improved as a result of plenty of serviceable work during the last few weeks, and he is moving freely in his allotted tasks. Pull Measure is the makings of a useful hurdler, as he has previously proved, and it is only a question of his reaching his best without developing a recurrence of lameness, for him to again be found a winner in this department. The Gay Shield—Lady Marie colt is furnishing into a solid sort, and is improving every week. He swings into his work wtih nice action, and all his tasks are being undertaken in an' attractive manner. He is a full-brother to Gay Sheila and Gay Blonde, and the progress he is making at present suggests that he will be ■» very solid candidate for early spring racing. So far no name has been claimed for him.

Model Girl will be started on the second and third days at tie Auckland winter meeting. This filly is showing improvement, but cannot be expected to win in the company she will be meeting. However, she should be capable of improving on her previous form.
