A radio message was sent to the Monowai, which left yesterday afternoon for Sydney to warn that vessel, but no reply was received. When the matter was* reported to the Marine Department in Auckland it was decided to dispatch the Government lighthouse steamer Matai immediately. •The Matai had been lying at the King's wharf since Thursday afternoon, and was to attend lighthouses in the Hauraki Gulf after the week-end. She left port shortly after midday for tV> North Cape.

When the Mariposa passed the Cap© at 0.00 p.m. yesterday the place where the light should have been shoving was just discernible. The Matai should reach the lialit about midnight to-night.

The North Cape light is distinct {rem the lighthouse at Capo Maria van Diemen, which is tended by several lightkeepers.
