AUCKLAND AFFAIRS.

RESIGNATION OF TREASURER,

SATURDAY AND MONDAY MATCHES. At a meeting of the Auckland Rugby League last evening, witli Mr. G. Grey Campbell presiding, the resignation was received, with many expressions of regret, of Mr. F. D. Ellis, who lias been lion, treasurer for 14 years. Ml'. Ellis is relinquishing his position owing to ill-health, and is leaving next month for Australia.

Mr. Grey Campbell said that when he ■was nvited to accept the responsibility of chairman of the Auckland Rugby League, he had been influenced by the good reputation, amongst others, of Mr. Ellis, who was for many years a trusted ollicer of the water department ot the City Council, with which the speaker had been associated. Mr. Campbell said he considered the Auckland League hac' been very fortunate in having for treasurer a man of Mr. Ellis' character and calibre. He moved that the resignation be accepted with regret, that a suitable minute be drafted in the records regarding his services, and that further acknowledgment be left to the chairman and secretary. The secretary, Mr. Ivan Culpan, who had been identified with Mr. Ellis from the time the latter had accepted the position of lion, treasurer, also paid a tribute to Mr. Ellis' services for the code. Messrs. Doble and Probert added tributes, and, on the motion of r - Mincham, it was decided to make Mr. Ellis a life member. Mr. J. E. Knowling, assistant treasurer, •was unanimously appointed to succeed Mr. Ellis. The Taranaki League wrote accepting June 30 as a suitable date for its fixture against Auckland at Carlaw Park. The board decided to ask the selectors to pick the Auckland team a fortnight ahead. The principal match on Saturday will be the second meeting of the season between Newton and Richmond, preceded by Marist Old Boys versus, Ponsonby. The board decided to hold a special day on Monday, when City and Devonport will play, with their reserve teams providing the curtain-raiser. It was stated that many requests had been received for some special football attraction on the holiday. It was reported .that the Mangere team would play at Tuakau on Monday, when the Ponsonby third intermediate team would make a special trip to play in a curtain-raiser. The St. John Ambulance Association -wrote congratulating the management on the fine facilities provided for the association at the new grandstand. It was decided to vote the usual contribution of £40 to the association, the chairman pointing out that the Rugby League had been pleased to devote a special day s proceeds during last season to considerably assist the association. The chairman announced that Dr. Pezaro had donated an electric sterilising unit for the ambulance room at the Park. It was decided to grant an application for the use Jof Carlaw Park on Sunday for a presentation of trophies contest by massed junior bands of Auckland. The Devonport United Club advised that Mr. A. Laing, sen., had been appointed coach and selector in succession to A. W. Seagar, a playing member. The New Zealand Council advised that authentic information had been received that the English ruling on the drop-out rule after a force-down was that the attacking side stand on the goal-line. However, the Australian Board's application for variation, to provide for the attacking side to stand five yards out, was being considered at a conference in England at present. The board decided to postpone the putting into operation of the new rule until June 9.
