In the -women's doubles second round, Misses Couquerque and Thomas defeated Misses Hardwicke and Stammers, 2—6, 7—5, 6—2; blisses and Rosambert defeated Miss Hartigan and Mrs. Molesworth, 6 —2, 6 —l. Parry, realising after Austin's defeat that he was the only Britisher left in the singles, was very nervous against Stefani, consequently the Italian, playing coolly, led by two sets to one. Then the match ended tragically. Perry, when leading by two games to one in the fourth set, slipped and badly strained a foot. Although groaning with pain Perry pluckily attempted to complete the match, but was overcome and fainted immediately the last ball was played.

The unfortunate ending takes _ little from the merit of Stefani's victory. Stcfani returned Perry's best shots for a two sets to one lead, and his chances of winning were brighter than Perry's when the accident occurred.

The Cramm-Menzel match produced the best tennis of the tournament, the clean, hard hitting of both players evoking great enthusiasm. Cramm was victorious only after a long strenuous contest.

Crawford began unimpressively, being upset by Hughes' heavily sliced shots, but later Crawford attacked Hughes' backhand. The Englishman then tried lobbing, but Crawford's smashes and volleys were too cleverly angled.

Boussus against Austin was leading by live games to two in the first set when Austin took live games in a row. Boussus was on top for the next two .sets. Austin attempted to take th® net, but was frequently passed. Austin rallied after the interval, -winning the fourth set which exhausted him, and ■Boussus finally scored an easy victory.
