Mass Sacrifice to Goddess of
Smallpox.
SLAUGHTER OF ANIMALS,

CALCUTTA, May 29.
The mass sacrifice of animals by Hindus in order to appease the goddess of smallpox was carried out at Ellorc, in Madras Presidency, to-day. The offerings included many buffaloes, 500 goats and 500 fowls. The killings occurred at midnight by torchlight and the blood was mixed with boiled l'ice and taken, in a weird procession, by thousands anc offered to the goddess. Subsequently it was strewn throughout the town in the belief that tlio smallpox epidemic ■vould abate.
