A NOVEL PUZZLE.
SUPPLY THE "ATES."
Here is a novel puzzle that has never before been conducted in these columns. In the story which appears elsewhere a number of spaccs have been left, and each of these may be filled by a single word which ends in "ate." For example, "late" is obviously the word that should be substituted for the first blank. All you have to do is rewrite the passage, filling in the blanks and clearly underlining such words as are inserted. A distinct dash should be substituted for any words you are unable to guess. A riddle must accompany each entry for this competition, and in the event of ties this will be taken into consideration as the deciding factor. Prizes of 7/6, 5/, 3/ and 2/6 are offered for the best entries received at this office by Wednesday next.
