LIMERICK CONTEST.

SOME GOOD VERSES RECEIVED

INTERESTING PUZZLE FOR NEXT WEEK. Dear Boys and Girls, That the limerick competition was a rare favourite was amply demonstrated by the scores of entries which confronted us on the day of judging. Some competitors, I am afraid, do not fully understand the meaning of the word "original," for a few of the verses submitted had a familiar ring and most certainly were not the unaided work of the competitor. A contest of this nature often becomes monotonous to the judges because of the sameness of the entries; not so in this case, however, for there was a diversity of subject matter which kept alive the interest of the judges until the very last entry had been read. In some cases the subjects were of topical interest, the patch campaign, the notable "G. 8.5., ar.cJ even the recent flood in Queen Street being worked into the verses of competitors. One limerick commented gently on the Minister of Finance's dash for solitude, where he could solve in peace the problems of State. Selecting the prize winners was no easy matter, and careful consideration had to be given before the final awards were made. Margaret Clarke's contribution was at once appealing, for not only did it "scan" correctly, but it was also of topical interest. Ailsa Ryan apparently has an altitude for limerick making, for she contributed three separate entries all of which were very good. The satisfying qualities of the "Star" were extolled in her verse which was awarded a half-crown prize. The effort of Kathleen Goddard had a .political flavour and was commented upon earlier in this letter. Quite a good attempt for a nine-year-old was sent in by Derek Clark, whilst prizes were also won by Chrissie Huey, Bill Holder, May Laing and Irene Morris. A novel and entertaininp puzzle has been arranged for next week. ||N^— Full particulars of this are to be found j if ■ in the competition announcement / L/ /T . J which appears elsewhere, so turn to it at once, then try for one of the cash prizes offered.
