BANKS AS "VILLAINS."
ATHENAEUM CUP DEBATE. "That the banks are the villains of the piece" was the subject of a debate between the Papatoetoe Debating Society and the Fabian Club, held at Papatoetoo last evening. Mr. F. H. Leonard presided. The debate is the second in tho annual contest for the Athenaeum Cup, which is at present held by Papatoetoe. The Fabian Club, taking the negative, was represented by Messrs. W. T. Anderton, C. W. Boswell and P. Humphries, while the Papatoetoo team comprised Messrs. E. H. Burton, C. J. Mahon and E. P. Greenhough The iudce Mr. A. J. Stallworthv, M.P., in, awarding the debate to the Fabians by 185 points to 167, said that team woik on both sides was good, and that the subject was well explored. Mr. C. J. Mahon remarked that the Papatoetoe Society was unfortunate m losing 1 * best speaker, Mr. S. J. E. Closey. ,
