RUGBY FOOTBALL.

WAIKATO UNION. When nominations for the Finlay Cup, the union's championship trophy, were discussed at a meeting of the executive of the Waikato Rugby Union on Friday night it was found that although the tune of the closing of nominations was May 25, only two sub-unions had sent in their nominations. The Waipa and Cambridge delegates stated that their sub-unions refused to challenge on the present system (knockout). The Hamilton delegates stated that they were in favour of reverting to the challenge system, which was operated previously and gave notice of motion in this direction for consideration at a general meeting to be held within a fortnight. The period for challenging is to be suspended in the meantime.

A letter was received from the Tnrannki Union stating that as it had cancelled its proposed visit to the North Auckland Union, it could not play Waikato on Saturday, September 12, as previously arranged. It was decided to accept the match for Wednesday, September S. The question of training the team to meet Auckland at Hamilton on June 4 was discussed and it was decided that the forwards be assembled for a half day in Hamilton on May 31.

It was decided'that the match v. Thames Valley Union be played at Matamata.
