USE OF RAIL CARS.

POSSIBLE ADOPTION IN N.Z,

The adoption of the use of rail cars in New Zealand Is a matter which is engaging the attention of the Railways

Board' and the Railways Department, according to the general manager, Mr. G. H. Mackley. He states that the rail car is one o'r tlie latest developments in rail transport;

"These cars are very economical to use," Mr. Mackley said, "though, of course, their efficient operation depends on economy, speed, and comfort. The New South Wales railways have been experimenting with the new cars, and the more recently constructed cars have attained a speed of 75 miles an hour."

The Railways Board, Mr. Mackley said, was showing the keenest interest in the trials. Their use 011 branch lines on which the railway service had been curtailed for economy reasons was an aspect that would not be overlooked. Under certain conditions they would be most suitable for the haulage 01 passengers on long journeys. Many of the big railway concerns in England were using these cars on their branch lines, and also for inspection work.
