RUGBY RUPTURE.
Novel Offer to France by English Rugby League. CONFUSING THE CODES. (Received 11 a.m.) PARIS, May 20. As the outcome of the Franco-British Rugby Unions breakdown in negotiations for the resumption of international matches, the secretary-general of the British Rugby League has informed the French Federation that fifteen-aside matches can be organised by the British Rugby League teams, despite the refusal of the Rugby Union to reinstate France. Two years ago the English Rugby Union notified the French Rugby Federation that it would not countenance any further matchea by French teams in England or English teams in France until the federation "put ite house in order. At that time there had been scandaJs in France arising out of rough play in competition games, and allegations of payments of bonuses to prominent French players. This year the French Federation sought Ho have the ban removed, but the English union declared that the French authorities must demonstrate that the same spirit of play as ruled in England prevailed in French Rugby, and must abolish competition games before inters£ -«r ,83*2;. ar%g as £^finS-dt™?f•-£ game shall be between teams of 13 men on each side. »
