TOURISTS FROM OVERSEAS.

Not long returned from a visit to America, made under conditions .which petmitted a wide and comprehensive view of the financial position of its people, Mr. F. Milner, rector of the Waitaki Boys' High School, has urged the Government to conduct.a vigorous campaign for tourists in the United States. It is sincerely to be hoped that his suggestion will receive the serious consideration from the Government that its importance demands. Americans are notoriously on the look-out for something new; to the vast bulk of them New Zealand is not even a name. Good work in making it known has been done by at least one of the steamship companies trading between the two countries, and that effort should be made use of in the only possible way, by following it up with a still more vigorous and widespread campaign. The opportunity was never so good. There are two lines of well-fitted and comfortable steamers available; the facilities when the tourists reach here are as efficient as could 'be expected in a young country. Hotels are on a high standard, tributes have been paid to the railways by many competent overseas observers, hunting and fishing, both inland and on the sea, are unequalled, road access is excellent, and the scenic splendours of the country duplicate all that other nations throughout the world have to offer. A vigorous campaign conducted in the immediate future throughout the United States would probably provide a bigger return, proportionately, than any other form of expenditure.
